Compliant actuation based on dielectric elastomers for a force-feedback device: modeling and experimental evaluation
Thanks to their large power densities, low costs and shock-insensitivity, Dielectric Elastomers (DE) seem to be a promising technology for the implementation of light and compact force-feedback devices such as, for instance, haptic interfaces. Nonetheless, the development of these kinds of DE-based systems is not trivial owing to the relevant dissipative phenomena that affect the DE when subjec...
متن کاملOn Designing Compliant Actuators Based On Dielectric Elastomers for Robotic Applications 523 On Designing Compliant Actuators Based On Dielectric Elastomers for Robotic Applications
This chapter reports on advances done in the design of compliant, Dielectric Elastomer based Linear Actuators (DELA). Dielectric Elastomers (DE) are incompressible deformable dielectrics which can experience deviatoric (isochoric) finite deformations in response to applied large electric fields while, at the same time, alter the applied electric fields in response to the deformations undergone ...
متن کاملDielectric Elastomer Actuators for A Portable Force Feedback Device
This paper focuses on the development of novel actuators for a portable force feedback glove for, but not limited to, the simulation of open surgeries. A conceptual design of a chain-like actuator based on electroactive polymers is introduced. One actuator element of this chain was built in order to explore and optimize the actuator manufacturing process. Actuators manufactured with this stable...
متن کاملMultilayer Dielectric Elastomers for Fast, Programmable Actuation without Prestretch.
A novel method for the fabrication of dielectric elastomer actuators (DEAs) combines acrylic polymers and single wall carbon nanotube network electrodes. DEAs made using this technique do not require prestretching, have extremely thin electrodes, and can be actuated at low voltage. The method is applied to create a multimorph device with nine actuation modes based on just four inputs.
متن کاملMechanisms of Large Actuation Strain in Dielectric Elastomers
Subject to a voltage, a dielectric elastomer (DE) deforms. Voltage-induced strains of above 100% have been observed when DEs are prestretched, and for DEs of certain network structures. Understanding mechanisms of large actuation strains is an active area of research. We propose that the voltage-stretch response of DEs may be modified by prestretch, or by using polymers with ‘‘short’’ chains. T...
